In order to get an ISO 9001 certification, organizations have to build a QMS. In case they have created one already, only a gap analysis is necessary to identify shortcomings of the current QMS towards ISO 9001. A registered ISO 9001 auditor will then audit the organization and give a detailed report about how good the current QMS complies with ISO 9000. He will also point the areas which need to be improved.  The organization is given some time to solve the problems and after a second (if successful) audit they can qualify for the ISO 9001 registration. It should be noted that organizations don’t need to be registered. They can also just announce that their organization’s QMS compiles with ISO 9001 (if it really does); however it might not have the credibility than a formal certification.
